As Project Managers on this characterful refurbishment and extension project, one of the key design elements we were tasked with delivering was the integration of a corner glazing feature—a central part of the client’s vision for a bright, open-plan family space that framed the fairytale entrance through the driveway.
Working in close collaboration with Musson Brown Architects, Helm was involved from an early stage to help shape the delivery strategy around the design intent—ensuring that the client’s aspirations could be realised aesthetically, practically and within the client’s budget.
Glazing That Frames the Space
From the outset, the corner glazing in the dining area was identified by the client as an essential feature—creating a strong visual and physical connection to the garden while allowing natural light to flood into the rear of the property.
Achieving this involved:
- Coordinating with structural and architectural teams to ensure minimal frame profiles could be achieved without compromising stability
- Careful sequencing during construction to ensure the glazing could be installed cleanly and without delay
- Managing procurement and lead times for high-specification glazing systems within the overall programme and budget
The result is a crisp, contemporary opening that transforms the space without overpowering the existing building fabric—a modern insert that feels calm, clean, and intentional.
In addition to the corner glazing, the scheme includes:
- A rear-facing window to frame garden views
- A large roof light over the kitchen to bring light deep into the floor plan
Together, these elements elevate the internal environment and meet the client’s aspiration for light-filled, well-connected living spaces.
Managing Detail Within Heritage Contexts
From a project management perspective, the glazing elements— particularly at the corner junction—required early coordination and ongoing dialogue between design, procurement, and site teams. Ensuring that the visual impact matched the client’s expectations, while maintaining programme and cost control, was a key focus throughout.
This project is also a reminder of the many small decisions that contribute to delivering quality in heritage settings. Modern detailing within traditional structures demands precision—and careful oversight to make sure the balance between old and new feels deliberate and harmonious.
