On Friday, 28th November, Gosforth High Street was transformed into a festive spectacle as nearly 1000 local residents and businesses gathered for the highly anticipated Christmas light switch on. The privately funded event once again showcased the strong community spirit that defines our vibrant High Street.
This year saw an increase in participation, with 77 Christmas trees installed in first floor brackets! The additional displays created a truly stunning scene, adding festive cheer to the heart of Gosforth.

The team at Sanderson Young once again played a central role in bringing the event to life – coordinating everything from wrapping and erecting the trees to organising the magical evening itself. Their dedication ensures the event has now become a highlight of the local festive calendar.

A particularly heart-warming moment came as the children of St. Oswalds Hospice were once again invited to press the button that illuminated the High Street, sparking joy and excitement as the lights burst into life. It was also lovely to have their special guest of Peter Rabbit on display and who will be visible throughout the region as part of their Wild Art Event in Spring/Summer 2026.

It was also lovely to hear the sounds of the choirs of Newcastle School for Boys Junior & Senior schools, who helped further add to the festivities with traditional carols and the famous Christmas songs we all know and love!
Building on last year’s success, even more businesses chose to stay open late, welcoming visitors with festive treats, mulled wine, and seasonal delights; these included Willis Café, Babucho, Baby Grey, Bao Baby, Osters, Etto in the Park, Kult, as well as Gosforth Central, who held a lovely twilight Christmas market. Their contribution helped create a lively, community driven atmosphere enjoyed by all who attended.

This year’s event has once again demonstrated the power of the local community and we look forward to seeing Gosforth High Street glow throughout December with the beautiful lights and festive spirit!
