Morpeth - Houses, Property and Homes to Rent and Buy

Morpeth is an excellent place to look for a home, property or house to rent or buy and became Northumberland's county town in the 1970s and despite recent boundary changes remains the county's administrative capital. Local government offices have given a modern feel but Morpeth has also retained its charm as an historic market town. We offer a wide selection of modern and period homes and houses to rent or buy within the Morpeth area.

Relics of Morpeth's long history can be found everywhere; to take just one example, a rare! medieval chantry survives by the old bridge. The chantry was a place for travellers to give thanks for escaping the notorious Border bandits named Reivers but over the years the little chapel has served as a school, hospital and even a bagpipe museum. Its latest role, as a tourist information office, recalls the original function of sheltering weary travellers.

Thankfully Morpeth's reputation as a haunt of Reivers (the town's name means Murder Path!) is consigned to history and today Morpeth is a pleasant mix of bustling high streets and quiet residential cul-de-sacs. One of the most popular open spaces is Carlisle Park, donated by the Earls of Carlisle who were once Lords of Morpeth's manor.

Carlisle Park stands opposite a castle which served as the town's jail until converted into the flats of Morpeth Court. From here, Thomas Telford's bridge takes travellers to Bridge Street and Rutherford's Department Store. In these days of cloned high streets, Rutherford's stands out as a gloriously independent emporium, certain to delight the most jaded shopper.

Morpeth straddles the river Wansbeck which rises in the Cheviot Hills to the West. As it flows to the North Sea, the river passes picture postcard villages such as Mitford, complete with Norman castle and Hartford whose church once sheltered Cromwell. In these quiet villages it is easy to forget that Newcastle is just 13 miles to the south.

Morpeth's close proximity to Newcastle, good local schools and excellent transport links means the town is especially attractive to commuters with families. The town offers a healthy stock of modern family homes in places such as Clark's Field where prices for 2 bed semis start at just £130,000. There are also some elegant period townhouses, especially behind Newgate Street, for around £350,000.

Recent developments have added prestigious residential conversions of historic industrial buildings (such as East Mill with luxury apartments from £299,000) to the local housing market. Such a range of property, combined with a central location and excellent local facilities means Morpeth will remain a thriving community for many years to come.
