We know how important the area you move to is, that's why we have created these area pages to help you look at the different areas around the North East that you may be considering moving to, we offer a great service, so if you are looking for house to rent or property to buy Gosforth contact us today for a great service. In the 19th Century rich industrialists created Newcastle's northern suburb of Gosforth from the medieval 'Goose Ford' - a village that was once the first staging post on The Great North Road from Newcastle to Edinburgh. Seeking to live away from the smoky factories that made their fortunes, the shipping and mining magnates chose to build their elegant terraces and villas in this light and airy location at the edge of Newcastle's Town Moor.

Gosforth's founding fathers planned their new suburb well. Newcastle lies just two miles to the south but the Town Moor creates a barrier to urban sprawl and ensures Gosforth keeps its independent character.

Besides a High Street, alive with shops, pubs and restaurants and long leafy avenues lined with superb Victorian and Edwardian townhouses, the creators of Gosforth added a wealth of sporting attractions to their new suburb. In the best Victorian tradition, Gosforth was given a cricket ground, golf course, rugby pitch, tennis courts and even a racetrack; all of which thrive today.

The transformation of Gosforth from medieval way station to chic suburb was completed with the addition of a hospital, several excellent schools (including one of the first private schools for girls in the North East) a railway line (now part of the Metro system) and some very, very fine houses. Newcastle's first family home with a million pound price tag was located in Gosforth and in locations like Graham Park Road seven figure sums are now the norm.

Yet despite the suburb's reputation as Newcastle's 'Millionaire's Row' there are still areas that represent extraordinary value for money. In South Gosforth (which confusingly lies to the east!) houses are only slightly more modest but considerably less pricey. A four bedroom 1930s semi in South Gosforth costs around £225,000 compared to £340,000 for a similar property in Gosforth. Similarly, the Garden Village district, which links Gosforth and South Gosforth, is a suburb within a suburb crammed with affordable, attractive property.

Perhaps the best illustration of Gosforth past, present and future is The Grove, a 2004 development which turned Procter & Gamble's old HQ into award winning apartments, townhouses and detached homes. With prices ranging from £150,000 (for a 2 bed apartment) to £900,000 (for a 6 bedroom, family home) The Grove is introducing a whole new generation to the delights of this very special location.
