Darras Hall - Houses, Property and Homes to Rent and Buy

Sanderson Young offer properties to rent and house and homes to buy throughout the North East including Darras Hall. Darras Hall, a purpose built suburb on the western edge of Newcastle, celebrated its 100th Birthday in 2007 and even a century after the first stone was laid, the estate remains one of the most inspirational addresses in the North East.

Houses, Homes and Properties for sale or rent within the Darras Hall Area

Darras Hall began life in 1907 when Newcastle philanthropist John Whiteside bought the derelict Darras Hall farm and divided the land into 185 five acre plots. In 1910 he started to sell the plots for £35 each to 'deserving' citizens of Newcastle who wanted the opportunity to build a new house and a new life for themselves and their families in the countryside.

The tradition of self-build in Darras Hall is still strong with the estate's smaller houses steadily being replaced with larger family homes but Darras Hall is unique because permission for all alterations must be approved by a committee of residents as well as the local authority. Whilst many permissions are granted the committee ensures Whiteside's vision of a 'garden village', with leafy avenues and wide boulevards, is protected from over development.

Today, Darras Hall is as popular as ever - and not just because the estate is home to several stars of Newcastle United Football Club and other North East celebrities. Excellent transport links to Newcastle (7 miles), good schools and leisure facilities and a thriving centre (Broadway - which boasts two of the best restaurants outside Newcastle) combine to keep Darras Hall at the top of the property pops.

The north side of Runnymede Road is, arguably, the most sought after Darras address thanks to its views over open countryside. A house here can cost well over £1 million but elsewhere in Darras Hall there are still properties available at more reasonable prices. A 4 bedroom semi on Western way averages around £300,000 whilst a detached 4 bedroom family home on Westsyde is around £450,000. If money is no object, the most expensive house in Darras Hall, located on Runnymede Road of course, is currently on the market for £2.5 million!
